In January 2022, two historic Reform Jewish congregations in Baton Rouge unified to form a new congregation, merging their legacies into a renovated synagogue on Kleinert Avenue. Completed in March 2024, the project transformed an existing site into a modern, flexible sacred space that honors both communities’ histories while meeting contemporary needs. The design incorporates symbolic elements like repurposed stained-glass windows, Jerusalem stone, and historical artifacts, creating a welcoming environment for spiritual, cultural, and communal activities. The renovation and expansion balanced the need for intimate weekly services with the capacity for larger gatherings, ensuring the synagogue serves as a vibrant community hub.
The synagogue features a versatile sanctuary with a fabric veil that adjusts for small or large services, connecting to a multi-purpose social hall for events and celebrations. New spaces include a library housing significant artifacts, adult education rooms, and communal areas with flexible furnishings. The design emphasizes accessibility, sustainability, and historical continuity, repurposing materials and integrating elements like eternal lights and Torahs. This thoughtful approach fosters unity and ensures the synagogue remains a cornerstone for future generations, embodying the principle of passing tradition from generation to generation.
